Brazil elections: Cheers and tears as Lula beats Bolsonaro

Supporters of Brazil’s former President Luiz Inácio ‘Lula’ da Silva erupted with pleasure as he gained the run-off of the nation’s presidential election.

The temper was gloomier within the defeated incumbent Jair Bolsonaro’s camp.

Lula gained 50.83% of all legitimate votes, whereas 49.17% of votes went to Bolsonaro, with slightly below 99% of the votes counted at 22:59 GMT.
